An idea of a UX Designer and a Data Scientist [This post is co-written with Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel (my sister).]
I am a night over-thinker. Sometimes, like really pretty rarely, that serves a purpose. This time, I was, unfortunately, thinking about everything that happened in 2020 and had this idea of a drawing — a word cloud. Then I started to expand it… Could the words be organized by month? Could this all be based on real data? Could I get data from newspapers all over the world, then identify the most commonly used words in headlines? …
I can watch a Friends episode for the 8th time in my life, laugh out loud and have fun. But I will admit that I had more fun playing with the Friends script data in R and figuring out stuff visualizing a simple dataset! So, the question is “is sitting at home on a Saturday night, drinking wine with your sister on zoom and coding a dataviz project considered geek?” It might be… Let me tell you how that happened.
Ironhack Wellness Project Part 2/2 — UI Design
Clear your mind for a minute. Think of nothing. Imagine yourself in a big wide emptiness. It’s white everywhere. Feel the air that blow into your face. It’s relaxing, isn’t it? And then see the thin line far, far away on the horizon. Slowly approach to that. On your way there, the horizon starts to become colorful. Bright, poppy colors. Red, orange, teal, green, blue, yellow, violet. Isn’t this such a great surprise! It makes you feel happy. And you smile. Put on your biggest smile now and come back to reality.
All of this originally started as a UX design team project. It was a story about empathizing, defining, ideating as well as post-it organizing, sketching, lots of fun and learning; until the creation of low fidelity paper wireframes. Two weeks ago I took from where we left off and continued UI designing it as an individual project. I can say that it was very challenging and the end result was quite… well you will know at the end of my post!
As UX/UI students we were aiming to improve French organic shop Naturalia’s online store and add a valuable feature…
This week at Ironhack bootcamp Paris, we worked on individual projects. The subject was Wellness, and the client was Inpes (Public Health Institute of France). We were briefed to choose a theme in their scope of activity, and design a digital product. I chose mental health. More specifically: happiness!
I will describe the whole process but first, let me introduce you Charlotte, a girl who I met along the way (or should I say ‘created’?) and worked for, the whole week. That’s right, she’s my primary persona. She is 28 years old and works as a Marketing Specialist since 4…
User: ‘Never bought anything from Naturalia e-shop.’
Designers: Why ?
User: ‘Because I didn’t even know Naturalia e-shop existed.’
Designers: But why ?
User: ‘I never buy for fresh products online. Organic ? Never.’
Designer: Wait, why ?
User: ‘I want to see and touch the fresh and organic products that I buy. So I can’t e-shop for groceries.’
Designers thinking… We have a winner problem here !
So how might we make sure people would shop for e-groceries online without worrying about the quality of the products they buy?
This was a quick summary of our first days of…
Carnegie Mellon has a more than 115 years of history. His founder Andrew Carnegie, a self-educated working boy, emigrates from Scotland to Pittsburgh in 1848. He becomes a successful entrepreneur and industrialist and founds the world largest steel producer company. But then he takes another path and turns into activism, and philanthropy; believing ‘to die rich is to die disgraced’. In 1900 he donates 1 million $ to create a technical institute in Pittsburgh, which will afterwards becomes very successful and in 1967 merges with a science research center funded by the Mellon family of Pittsburgh. After the merger, the…
Before saying too much, I put in the prototype link. :)
With Invision, even though I had only black and white wireframes, it felt like I made an app. For this assignment I only did what was asked so far but there are some questions at the top of my head that I have to research for to better use the app.
Invision platform was enough intuitive and easy to use. I watched some beginner tutorials and it was already clear for me to build this simple prototype. …
Here goes my third exercise on Ironhack prework, and I must say this was the most fun assignment until now. It was the first time I used Sketch app. I only struggled a little bit on the masking tools, and mostly when the app or plugins crashed a few times. Well luckily these crashes didn’t take away my motivation.
These are my final ‘clone’ UIs. I used some additional plugins such as Unsplash It (for the background images) and Content Generator (for the persona images).
Throughout this exercise I learned that the tool has a lot of similarities with Adobe…
